Moving Checklist: What to Do Before, During, and After the Move

h (11)

Whether you're moving across town or across the country, relocating to a new home is exciting and a little overwhelming. Between packing, paperwork, and logistics, there’s a lot to keep track of.

As a real estate agent, I’ve helped many clients navigate the moving process smoothly. To make things easier, I’ve put together this practical moving checklist to help you stay organized before, during, and after your move.

✅ BEFORE THE MOVE:

1. Start Planning Early
As soon as your move is confirmed, create a timeline. Schedule movers, reserve a moving truck, or recruit friends and family if you're doing it yourself.

2. Declutter
Go room by room and donate, sell, or toss anything you no longer need. The less you move, the easier (and cheaper) it will be.

3. Notify Important Parties

Update your address with:

  • The post office
  • Your bank and credit cards
  • Utility providers
  • Insurance companies
  • Your employer
  • Subscriptions and memberships

4. Gather Supplies
Start collecting boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and markers for labeling.

5. Pack Non-Essentials First
Begin with items you won’t need right away like books, décor, out-of-season clothes, etc.

🚚 DURING THE MOVE

1. Pack a First-Night Box
Include toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, phone chargers, and snacks. This will make your first night less stressful.

2. Label Everything Clearly
Write the room and contents on each box. This will help the movers (and your future self) know exactly where everything goes.

3. Take Photos of Electronics
Before unplugging wires, take a picture of how everything is connected. It’ll save you time later when reconnecting.

4. Do a Final Walkthrough
Check closets, cabinets, and drawers one last time before locking up.

🏠 AFTER THE MOVE

1. Unpack Strategically
Start with the essentials: kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Save decorative items for last.

2. Set Up Utilities
Make sure water, electricity, gas, internet, and trash services are activated and transferred.

3. Update Your License & Voter Registration
Once you’re settled, visit your local DMV and voter registration office to update your info.

4. Explore Your Neighborhood
Take some time to drive around, meet your neighbors, and get familiar with nearby grocery stores, parks, and local businesses.

Moving doesn’t have to be chaotic. With the right checklist and a bit of planning, it can be a smooth and exciting transition into your next chapter.

If you’re in the process of buying or selling and need personalized moving advice, I’d be happy to help every step of the way.
